Grace Episcopal Church welcomes Martha Jones Burford as our new Minister of Music. Martha comes to us most recently from Canterbury Episcopal School in Greensboro where she has served as a teacher and Chapel Organist. Among a number of other parishes served, Martha served at St. John's Historic Parish and the Church of the Holy Comforter in Richmond.
Martha is a graduate of Duke University and post graduate studies at Duke Divinity School, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Church Divinity School of the Pacific. She is a published composer, co-founder and editor of the publication Church Music Forward and a member of the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Church Music for the Episcopal Church. She will make her home in Lexington with her husband, David and a kennel of dachshunds.
The adult choir sings at our 10:30 AM service, as well as for special services like Evensong, Christmas Eve and Easter Vigil. The group is made up of volunteers. We sing music from the 15th century through to present day. Rehearsals are from
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM on Thursdays.
The Junior Choir is for children 7 years old and up. In rehearsals, the children work through the Royal School of Church Music’s Voice For Life program, in addition to the anthems and service music they learn. The Junior Choir joins regularly with the Adult Choir to sing at the 10:30 AM service. Rehearsals are from 3:45 PM - 4:45 PM on Wednesdays and include snacks for the children.
Invitation to musicians:
In addition to our choirs, instrumentalists play an important role in worship at Grace. Instrumentalists augment our regular 10:30 AM service, special services, and our 5:00 PM Taizé Eucharist on the second Sunday of the month. If you play an instrument, you are invited join us for one of these services.
